Best to do in One Day - Naples, Italy
Our cruise ship will be stopping in Naples, Italy for about 12 hours in October. Am interested in the best suggestions for sightseeing, shopping, markets, etc. What about side trip....Capri? Since we will be there for such a short period of time, your help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi deco,
With only 12 hrs, I suggest that you either stay in Naples or visit the Amalfi Coast, but not both.
Will your ship take you along the AC? If so, I suggest Naples.

Hello,
Shopping - Nearby Sorrento for an inlaid musical jewelry box.
Siteseeing 1 - Rent a car and drive the Amalfi Coast, stopping for lunch in Positano and perhaps grabbing that jewelry box in Sorrento.
Siteseeing 2 - Train to Herculaneum to visit ruins (much smaller than Pompeii, but gives you much the same). Return to Naples and tour the Archeological Museum (many of Pompeii/Herculaneum artifacts are in the museum).
Siteseeing 3 - Rent a car or train to tour Caserta (the 'Versailles of Italy') The summer house of the nobility.
Siteseeing 4 - Local transportation to tour Capodimente (Museum and park) Broad range of artifacts and historical pieces
Siteseeing 5 - Boat to Capri, be bored for the day. There really isn't much there for a 1/2 day other than high end shopping and the over hyped Grotto tour.
Best choices? 1 or 2

I see you've done a number of these posts for your various cruise ports. All I can say is, I'd be very uncomfortable making very many plans on my own for a day trip from the port. So many things can happen and you can so easily miss your boat.
You really can't do justice to any of the places you mention in a day (thank goodness you have two days in Venice!). This is the reason that cruise ships make a lot of effort in planning shore excursions. They may seem expensive and you may be opposed to group tours, but the bottom line is, you're then relying on them to get you to the various spots that experience has taught them people will enjoy, and you rely on them to get you back on time. I think it's worth it in the long run for peace of mind. Otherwise you are likely to end up scrambling with transportation issues and not really enjoy your day. By the way, people going off and missing their departure and having to catch up at the next port is a very common issue!!

Sorry, posted too soon. I wanted to give a couple of examples.
Let's say you want to go to Capri and visit the Blue Grotto. No doubt the ship will offer a shore excursion which includes that. (I'd be amazed if they didn't.) They will get you there, have the boats ready and you will do it. On your own, you may get there and find a long waiting time for boats, then miss the bus or other boat back to where you are going.
These excursions will also have immediate entrance at museums or sites on their itineraries. No issues looking for parking or standing in line to buy tickets or waiting for entrance times. It all makes a lot of sense, I can assure you that you are likely to get more accomplished if you let the experienced guide you, than if you try to improvise it all on your own.
