Best stop between Split and Dubrovnik?

Hello everyone,
My mother and I will be traveling to Croatia in June 2017, but we are not sure on our itinerary yet. We know we are going to spend about 4 days in split and 4 days in Dubrovnik, but we are also looking for a city inbetween the two that we could stay in for about 3 days when traveling from one to the other. Would you guys suggest a spot on an island over the mainland coast? So far I have looked at Makarska and Omis, but I am not sure if these cities have enough to do to last a few days, but maybe I am mistaken. Let me know what cities you suggest I look into! Thanks!

Hvar and Korcula would, I think, be worth considering. FWIW, I think Hvar offers more than Korcula, but I found Hvar Town way to upscale and party-hearty for my tastes. I loved Korcula, but it doesn't offer as much to see or do.

Depending on your interests, 4 days in Dubrovnik could be a bit much; 4 days in Split (with day trips) a bit too little. You might play with your options a bit.

I strongly recommend that you consult a good guidebook or two, perhaps the Rough Guide.

Good luck!

I pretty much agree with kja if you are planning to take day trips from Split. If not, I would only spend 2 days in Split then to Hvar Town for 2 full days, followed by 3 days in Korcula Town and 4 in Dubrovnik.

The tourist information office in Hvar Town offers a wonderful all day Range Rover tour of Hvar Island which is well worth the price (which includes a wonderful seaside lunch).

As kja states, 3 days is a bit much in Korcula Town unless you take the local bus to Vela Luka which is located on the far side of Korcula Island. We found Vela Luka fascinating because it still had a strong communist era influence when compared to Korcula Town. As a bonus you get to see the entire island…twice!

Dubrovnik it worth 4 days in my humble opinion. We have visited three times and still love it. It is worth spending a day visiting Montenegro and another visiting Lokrum Island and Cavtat which are easily accessible by boats from the old harbor in Dubrovnik.

The only challenge to this itinerary it the ferry schedules from Hvar Island to Korcula Town and on to Dubrovnik. It is possible to take bus from Korcula Town to Dubrovnik if necessary but the ferry is more fun.

Is there a reason you are not considering the sea option ans stopping on an island?
There is a bus from Dubrovnik to Korcula (bus takes a ferry) and there are the Krilo catamaran and Jadrolinija ferries and catamarans (just google those two names for schedules).
Either Korcula or Hvar will have more to offer than Omis or Makarska for three days, unless you are very outdoorsy (river rafting, hiking) or planned to hire a car and explore the interior (Bosnia). Depending on the day trips you had planned for Split and Dubrovnik, you may be able to visit both islands by reallocating a couple days.
