Best route from A to B - driving in Italy

Jump to last reply

We are going to be driving from Piedmont region (Barbaresco) to Florence in October. Google Maps has two routes we would consider. One option is the A1/A21 (Piacenza - Parma - Bologna - Florence) and the other option is the A11/A12 (Savona - Genoa - Lucca - Florence). It's roughly 4.0 - 4.5 hrs either way, so that's not a major factor for us. More relevant for us are the following:

- better scenic route? Hugging the coastline sounds pretty good.

- better driving conditions? Maybe this is more aptly phrased as 'less bad'. Maybe the coastal route has narrower roads, crazier drivers, more traffic, etc.

Thoughts?
