Best route from A to B - driving in Italy

We are going to be driving from Piedmont region (Barbaresco) to Florence in October. Google Maps has two routes we would consider. One option is the A1/A21 (Piacenza - Parma - Bologna - Florence) and the other option is the A11/A12 (Savona - Genoa - Lucca - Florence). It's roughly 4.0 - 4.5 hrs either way, so that's not a major factor for us. More relevant for us are the following:

- better scenic route? Hugging the coastline sounds pretty good.

- better driving conditions? Maybe this is more aptly phrased as 'less bad'. Maybe the coastal route has narrower roads, crazier drivers, more traffic, etc.

Thoughts?
