At the seaside (Fregene or Ostia).
In the upper parts of the Foro Romanum gardens.
Some rooftop terraces of hotels/bars close to the Spanisch steps.
Depends a bit if it is for tomorrow or in mid summer...

Watching the sunset from the top of Castel Sant'Angelo is a memory I always treasure, and luckily I had a camera with me, so I was able to photograph it, and the lights in Vatican City coming up as twilight descended. Fabulous! In the morning, the sunrise from the top of the Spanish Steps is quite nice, and also the top of the Vittorio Emanuel monument.

While we weren't crazy about the hotel itself, the sunrise and sunset views from the rooftop terrace of the Colonna Palace were quite nice. Here's one:

I third Ganicolo Hill!!!
Its a little hidden treasure with the most OUTSTANDING views! It seems I tell all my friends to check it out when they head to Rome, but I have yet for one of them to actually go up there. Its beautiful.

Sunrise: Gianicolo Hill
Sunset: - Trinità dei Monti (Above Piazza di Spagna)
- Pincio (up Piazza del Popolo)
Sunset from the Gianicolo is actually stunning, even if you don't get to see the actual red Sun sphere, you see from there the roofs of the city getting red in a way you don't get to see when you have the sun in front of you.

We saw a wonderful sunset from Piazza del Quirnale, where Via XX Settembre ends. It's up on a hill and all the domes of Rome shimmering in the setting sun are quite a sight.
No sunrises--on my vacations, I can't think of any reason to get up that early...

Just for clarification, my atlas shows a Piazzale G. Garibaldi and a Piazzale A. Garibaldi in the Parco Gianicolo area. Am I in the right place? Can anyone tell me if this park is well lit and considered safe after dark? Thanks!

Nutella, you are in the right place. There are two piazzas in Parco Giancolo. What you want to do is walk up through the stone entrance gates (if recollection serves) up the Passeggiata del Garibaldi. You will reach the Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi first, keep walking up the hill, and you will then reach Piazzale Anita Garibaldi. This is the overlook where you can see fantastic views of the city. It's really wonderful up there. It's always crowded with people. If the weather is nice, the food vendors have their carts out and you can grab something to eat. I was there late in the afternoon, not dark, so I can't tell you how many people are there in the twilight/moonlight, however.

You don't have to worry too much about what neighborhoods/places are safe in quite the same way you do in the States, with the possible exception of Termini, the train station. I was alone and walked everywhere. It's a very safe city, with very little of the crimes to which we've unfortunately become so accustomed. Yes, these spots, and there are several vantage points at the top of Ganicolo, are quite safe.

Thanks diva. I should have mentioned, I'm being extra cautious since I'm carrying around conspicuous photo equipment. I'll have to trust my judgement when I'm there, but for now, it's good to know that area is considered safe!
