Best of midrange Sorrento lodging?
I've been to Fodor"s own comments, www.venere.com and italyby.com and traveladviser as well, and now I'm completely cross-eyed. We want to stay in Sorrento in latter May for a couple of nights, as base for daytrips to Pompeii, Amalfi, and maybe Capri. Would love comments from those who know the town and possibly some of the hotels.
Trying to find a place for under or about 200E per double room per night with decent view, easy walk to town but QUIET, per favore -- and not huge runs of stairs! It seems that there are plenty in the deluxe range and a good number in the budget range, but the midrange isn't so plentiful -- and I finally realized that, among other things, I don't really have a sense of distances nor do I entirely trust some of the self-descriptions of the places. (If we could afford 300E, it all becomes easy, but what was $250 a few years ago is now $400 and it makes a difference.)
Can anyone who's been there make a suggestion for the perfect place?

If you can give up the view, Casa Astarita B&B is a very pleasant place -- family-run, and very friendly. We just stayed there last month and would definitely recommend it. Our room didn't face the street and wasn't noisy, although I guess there might have been more noise on the street side. It's on the main street of Sorrento, and you can walk to everything. Under 100 E for a double room, including breakfast and Internet access. It's not luxurious, but it was very comfortable and had everything we needed, including a very clean, decent-sized room, and comfortable bed.
Not huge runs of stairs, although it is on the second floor (no elevator).

About the Bristol, I have seen their name on group tour itineraries and maybe that is what they are using to fill their rooms now? Anyone else know? It sounded like a good place.

Try the Aminta. I think you have to email for their rates. They are up the hill but not that far from town and have excellent views and will be quiet.
www.aminta.com Most hotels that aren't in the center of town have shuttles. I'm not sure if the Aminta does or not but the public buses go by the hotel pretty often.
We stayed up the hill above Aminta at Il Nido and enjoyed being out of town but it is more of a budget hotel than what you are looking for with rates around 100E. www.ilnido.it
Both hotels have AC, pools and webcams so checkout their views.

We were pleasantly surprised and very pleased with the Hotel Minerva in sorrento. I booked it thinking it was a budget hotel, and got a triple room for 150 euros and a double room with balcony and ocean view for around 160 euros. This was in June.
wow! what a view! View is great from the patio area where they serve a terrific breakfast buffet, and view from our balcony. We felt like we got the bonus plan! there's a pool but we didn't have time to use it as we took day-trips from this hotel.
Ask for a room on one of the upper floors, as my sensitive nose detected a musty smell in some of the lower floor hallways. Our rooms were fine. Our driver told us dampness is sometimes a problem in sorrento hotels.
Only one problem: When you step out the door of this hotel, you basically step into the street! I'm not sure how easy it is to walk around the corner from here. It's a short drive from down-town, but it might be more convenient to get a taxi or bus than to try to walk.
We couldn't hear any traffic noise from our room with balcony on one of the upper floors. Nice and quiet.

Hotel Aminta HAS a shuttle service.
Hotel Bristol is functioning (not today, since I drove by yesterday and they 're doing some renovation works)
Yes, Minerva is very nice (around the corner from the Bristol)

BellevueSyrene: Great view on the water, central,not too big, quiet, nice style(in my opinion), private lift to the water (not really a beach, but as typically in Sorrento, a private platform on the water), very charming public terraces above the sea with tables. Even though some web-sites say it has a sw.pool, I've never seen it and don't think it has it.

The Antiche Mura is very central. Basically it's right behind the main square (Piazza Tasso). It's a brand new hotel and should be also quiet (expecially because during Spring and Summer they close that area to traffic from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.). You don't have sea views from the hotel, but I can say that I've generally had good comments by people staying there

Cassandra- our family of 6 will be staying at the Bristol in 3 weeks. We have 2 ocean front triple rooms for 190 euros each. This hotel has gotten very favorable reviews on TripAdvisor and was recommended highly by my parents who stayed there 18 months ago.

I have a reservation for May 2005 at the Bristol in Sorrento. They are very slow in responding to emails. Don't know why. Have stayed here previously so want to try again as I loved it there. Also stayed at the Presidente up high in the hills overlooking the city. Has gotten out of my price range completely. Bristol is just a short downhill walk to town.
I saw a posting last week that said they were doing renovations to the Bristol so this may be why it is not responding to your email.
Popular with the British I've heard. What's good enough for the Queen's people is good enough for me.

You might want to check out the Grand Hotel Riviera. We stayed there several years ago - short walk into town. Great views from the terrace or sea view rooms. Nice pool area or take the elevator down to the sea. Room was good sized and nice bathroom. Every nite I had a glass of wine on the terrace watching the sun go down - life should always be so wonderful!
