Can anyone recommend a map or set of maps that meet the following criteria

a) Road atlas of Provence (don't need Cote DAzur)
b) Relatively detailed map of Aix-en-Provence
c) easiy to fold - not huge

I know there is the Michelin 528 map - but that is a monster. Not sure I really need all that detail.

There are these plastic foldible laminated maps in the 'Streetwise' series. There have a Provence map. but that may not have enough detail.

I have yet to find a decent map of Aix.

Hi rholt, that is funny, I was sure it was you ;-)
why don't you print the part of Aix you need on mappy or viamichelin websites for ex?
I know michelin makes books called "le guide vert" about Provence with maps and things to see.

Get Michelin Map # 113 for Provence - scale 1/160,000. It has a city index. If you will only do the normal touristy stuff in Aix, all you need is the map in either the green Michilin guide, or the red guide. The Red guide shows 1-way streets, so it's helpful if you are driving in/out of time. The 500 series Michelin maps are on a diffetrent scale, & you have to squint a lot. There are 300 series maps for Provence, but you might need 3 of them to cover all areas you might want to visit while there. Map 113 is your best bet.

I have used several maps for that area -- mainly I use the yellow Michelin for the entire area and supplemented that with smaller laminated folding ones. I have the Streetwise Provence and it's not too bad, actually, although it is missing some smaller roads.

A similar laminated folding map which is better is the Insight Map to Provence (called Fleximap series). It costs about $8 and I just cost at a bookstore. The advantage over the Streetwise is that it has the topography marked better -- so you can more easily tell the hills or mountains AND it has detailed city maps on the back of the central city for Aix, Avignon and Arles. I think their Aix map will suit your purposes. It's a lot easier to use than Michelin maps and better than the ones in their Green Guide.

Christina - if you are still using the yellow maps, they were replaced several years ago with 500 series maps which are on the scale 1/200,000 (same as the yellow maps). You won't have to squint as much and the maps are physically smaller if you use the 300 series maps with a city index (scale 1/150,000). Like I said earlier, there is the 113 map which is green and covers Provence as far east as Aix, as far west as Montpellier, and as far north as Montelimar. I like the Michelin Maps because the scenic roads are shaded in green, and cities with restaurants or hotels are underlined. The green guide has several suggested walking itineraries for Aix

Thanks, Stu, I have bought a green one recently when I wanted more detail (for the Drome), but I don't replace maps that frequently nor really buy a lot of them as I don't travel by car that much in France. I actually hate Michelin maps (heresy, I know), I think they are are really difficult to figure out anything on them -- there is too much junk marked all over the place.
