Best location on Amalfi coast?

I am trying to plan a trip to the Amafi Coast. I need suggestions for places to stay that are scenic, well located for day trips to historical sights, and have access to restaurants. I am willing to stay in hotels or perhaps a weekly rental. Also, which season would be best to visit this area; spring or early fall?

Hi showe,

We stayed at the Le Sirene in Praiano last fall. Weather was very nice except for rain on the first and last days.

See the AC portion of my trip report.

Most important question, especially if you're planning to do a number of day trips is how you plan to travel. Do you want to have a car? I find public transportation on the Amalfi coast to be a little tricky -- making connections and getting from one place to another, or else very expensive if by private car or taxi. Although we had a car, I'll never forget the day we took a boat from Positano to Amalfi, the weather changed and boats were cancelled and we waited hours to get a bus -- finally pushing our way like animals for the privilege of standing up on an already filled bus headed back to Positano.

For transport connections here on the Amalfi Coast the two best places to be based are Amalfi and Sorrento and a two centre trip staying in these two places will enable you to easily reach Naples, Pompei,Positano,Paestum, Ercolano, Ravello,Capri either by bus, train or boat. WWW.sita-on-line.it for buses WWW.trenitalia.com for national trains WWW.vesuviana.it for CV local trains (Sorrento,Pompei,Ercolano,Naples) and WWW.metrodelmare.com for boat services on the Amalfi Coast, WWW.Caprionline.com for information relating to Capri.

I got married in Ravello last year. It's a very short bus ride up to Ravello from Amalfi. We stayed at the Palazzo Sasso Hotel. Beautiful views, awesome surrounding. A bit pricey - check out their website www.palazzosasso.it

I'm jealous. Amalfi is beautiful. Enjoy!!!!!!

I stayed at the Hotel Open Gate in June of 2003 and loved it. But in the summer it can be very hot and they do not have A/C.

We stayed in Sorrento at the Bellevue Serene which is right on the Bay of Naples. We found Sorrento to be a great location for touring the Amalfi coast. It's easy to get the boat to Capri and there's plenty to do at night because the town is a little bigger than most of the other well known towns. There are plenty of restaurant choices and shops so at night time when you get done driving around the other coast towns and head back to Sorrento, there's lots of activity and great street activity for just strolling around and relaxing.

I would stay in Sorrento, Boat to Amalfi and stay overnight (yes, that's two hotels for one night) in either Amalfi or Ravello.

Then boat back.

Bus (or boat) between Ravello, Amalfi and Positnano.

Then boat or bus back to Sorrento depending upon how late it is.

I agree with WalkAmalfi, both Sorrento and Amalfi are superb choices. Sorrento gives you access to the northern end of the "costiera amalfitana", while Amalfi is a perfect place to go to Ravello, Positano, etc. The best time to go (IMO) would be in May and even early June, before the hordes arrive in the summer months. I am going to be there in September, so hopefully fewer people around at that time but still great weather!
