We're planning a stay in a Spanish Villa or farmhouse next late June/early July with friends, kids (ages 3 and up) and grandparents. We're hoping to do a month, and are trying to figure out the best location for us. We'd really like to settle one place and do lots of daytrips by car. Our priorities are good weather/scenery/people, good food, good wine, a bit of art/culture and some points of interest for the kids. Suggestions? We've never been to Spain before and don't know where to start.

Not as an opposing view, but another option:
In the wine country of the Penedès between Barcelona and Tarragona, some 10-20kms from the Med coast. You'll have hundreds of beaches nearby, world famous architecture and sights, lots of food and wine to sample, castles from the Templar era along the River Ebro, Barcelona and Tarragona as day trip destinations, and Port Aventura for the kids

Thank you all! The Basque region does look beautiful, and it's unique culture and history sound intriguing, but after checking out Alt Penedes I think it's just what we had in mind for our first taste of Spain. Hilltowns, wineries, easy daytrips to Barcelona and the Mediterranean - perfect! And thanks so much for the website link - gives a great overview of the region and one of the farmhouses listed just might be perfect for us.

Actually I do agree that for your first Spain trip with your kids, this is the better option.
But come back with the family and do the Basque Country next time!

She has already booked a rental with them for next July, and has used them to book an apt and home in Italy in the past.
At that time of year the most interesting part of Spain - Andalusia - is very hot - highs often hit 100 - and I wouldn't reco traveling there with kids then. Any other tim eo year yes - but no then.
You might want to consider doing 2 two-week stays - one near Barcelona and the other one on the Atlantic coast.
