Best home base for going to Neuschwanstein castle
I have one night to stay in the Bavaria area and see the Neuschwanstein castle. Any recommendations for a nice, scenic town to stay in. We want to be close to the castle but still be in a cool area/have a nice dinner/ect.

There are several villages nearby including Hohenschwangau. Of, if you want a larger town that is still charming but has many more choices of hotels and restaurants you might want to stay in Garmisch, which is about an hour away by car.

The closest would be the little town Schwangau (Hohenschwangau is the name of the other castle) with a couple of hotels in walking distance of Neuschwanstein. Füssen is the next larger town which is 4 to 5 km from Neuschwanstein.

We were driving in Bavaria. We spent a night in the town of Hohenschwangau, stayed at the Hotel Muller and ate dinner there with a view of Neuschwanstein, walked up and toured the castle first thing the next morning, then continued north on our travels. There's also a shuttle that will take you up to Neuschwanstein.
This was a hurried visit and we didn't take time to see Hohenschwangau Castle. You may want to be more leisurely.
(We stopped next at Wieskirche, an elaborate rococo church in a cow pasture, a memorable contrast).

We loved our two stays in Fuessen. Very chaming old town close to the castles. Both times we stayed at the Hotel zum Hechten.

Hi hew,
Another vote for the Zum Hechten. They have a parking lot.
You can easily have a cuppa, drive out to the castle to get your tickets and be back for bkfst.
If you tell us the rest of your itinerary, we might be able to be more helpful.
