Best German Town Near Maastricht

Hello Germans (Guten Tag! Wie geht es Ihnen?) & Germany Travelers: I will be going to Maastricht, Nederland next year and would advice on two or three towns/cities in western Germany to visit: i've been reading about Aachen, Bonn, Cologne & Dusseldorf, but i'm not limited to these towns. Please suggest places of interest: I like history, medieval places, castles (along the Rhine??) art, music, food, Beer!!!!!!

Hi
Check out Trier in Germany. It has an old Roman gate, the Porto Nigra. It is also the oldest city in Germany. It was capital of the western territories of the Roman Empire. The Trier Cathedral with part dating to the 4th cent. The Roman baths and amphitheatre as well as Karl Marx's birthplace. We were there many years ago and thought is was a great place to visit.

Very close to Maastricht is Aachen with the world-famous cathedral from the year 800, a magnificent gothic city hall, and - just round the corner - the romantic Postwagen restaurant to enjoy beer and regional fare. (There are also two Michelin-star-decorated gourmet restaurants in Aachen)

Cologne is also a good bet: The cathedral, 12 romanesque churches, roman ruins (the remnants of the governor's palace in the cellar of the city hall!), and, of course, beer halls. Outstanding is the Roman-Germanic Museum as well as the Wallraff-Richartz-Museum for medieval art and Museum Ludwig for modern art.

Düsseldorf is the German mecca for contemporary art. Two excellent museums (K20 for the 20th century and K21 for the 21st century) and many exhibitions. And the Altstadt, Germany's largest entertainment district. Stroll along the riverfront and merge with the colorful crowd.

I second Aachen. It is also the rich in the history of Charlemagne.
