Best Districts / Areas to stay for a Family of 4 in Rome

As part of a bigger trip we are looking at spending a 4-5 days week in Rome at towards the end of October 2012. We are a family of 4 with two girls 13 and 9. Our flight back to New Zealand leaves Rome.

Time will be spent sightseeing and enjoying the culture...

I would appreciate any thoughts on what districts / areas we should be narrowing our search on for an Apartment.

Thanks.

Central Rome is not that big so providing you stay somewhere in the historical centre (e.g. Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, near St Peters, near Colesseum, Piazza di Popolo, Trastevere) you can't really go wrong. Some say that the area around Roma Termini is not ideal but I've never had any problems staying there either.

You may also like Trastevere, its across the river from the historic centre but about a 10 - 15 min walk to campo di fiori. Lots of lively restaurants and its a bit quieter than the historic centre.

If you stay in Trastevere, we stayed at Hotel Santa Maria with our kids when they were younh teens. The hotel was a quiet oasis in a great (non-touristy) neighborhood with tons of restaurants and we walked everywhere. We had a loft so the kids had twin beds downstairs. Breakfast was included - it was a very comfortable stay.

I am also travelling with our two children aged 11 and 14 to Rome this summer and we had a tough time figuring out where to stay. I have booked the exact room that carolv is referring to in the above post at the Hotel Santa Maria.

The other options included quads at the Albergo Cesari and Residenza Canali but somehow the Santa Maria seemed a little more appealing.

My husband did not want to stay in an apartment this trip but if you are willing to do so, www.sleepinitaly.com has some really nice looking ones in the centro - Piazza Navona + Pantheon area.
