Friends are leaving our city but before they move to their new home they are taking a 3 month tour of Europe. I thought a nice gift would be some means of keeping a record of their trip. Has anyone any thoughts?

Hi Ann, I'm also interested in what type of journal to use. Topping this to see if we can both get an answer.
The specialty paper/card stores have some gorgeous hard bound 7"x5" books, with ancient maps or distressed looking faux leather on the cover. That along with a nice pen would make a wonderfull going away gift.
Rand McNally has several varieties. I like to use one that includes pages that do not have lines. I use those pages for hand-drawn maps, when I am asking for directions from locals.
I like a journal with a spiral binder so I can write on both sides of the page easily.
