Best Areas to stay in Amsterdam

Where is the best section of Amsterdam to stay where the canals are right outside the door of your Hotel? There are the Central area, the West ring, the East ring, etc. Having visited the city, could anyone advise me as to where is best to make reservations?

Amsterdam has a relatively small/compact city-center. A hotel in 'centrum' is almost guaranteed to have the canals nearby.

What kind of hotel are you looking for?

There are also a lot of posts about Amsterdam with great hotel tips. Just use the 'search-function'.

As was said there are canals everywhere. We chose a hotel near Vondelpark to be close to several ,museums. With the good transport in AMsterdam , I was more interested in rates, convenience and an elevator. A lot of the old charming hotels were walkups!

Research Maes Bed & Breakfast. Centrally located, upscale area, one block off a canal, delightful hosts, spotlessly clean, great breakfast, friendly guests.

We stayed there in May 2006 and it was the highlight of our trip.

I like the "Canal Ring", in the western? part of the city, tho actually very central. Mae's B & B is in that area. Some hotels do have elevators, but not all. It is a great area for sitting canalside, dining and people watching. We have stayed at the Canal House several times but this last spring stayed at Mae's. Very close to the Jordaan - great area for cafes, little shops, leisurely strolling. Away from the hectic scene of central Amsterdam but also close to train station and other transportation options. The Vondel Park area is nice too but I prefer the atmosphere of the Canal Ring. But anywhere you stay, you should have a pleasant stay in Amsterdam!
