Best area to stay in Venice

Best area to stay in Venice
Where is the best "neighborhood" to stay in a hotel in Venice? Should we stay near St. Mark's Square? We want to stay in the area where we can easily experience the best attractions w/in reasonable walking distance.

I enjoy the Dosudoro (sp!, sorry)esp. near the Zattare. Close enough to walk to St. Mark's and other major attractions but not in the crowds of St. Mark's square. Several canal side restaurants where you can sit and enjoy a leisurely meal and watch the water traffic.

Seriously, there is no "best" area to stay in Venice. There are only "favorite" areas depending on whom you ask. As you will be told by others, Venice is eminently walkable and nothing is too far away unless you have extreme problems in moving around on foot. And the "best attractions" are everywhere, so don't worry about distances.
Anyway, most people you ask will have a favorite area. Mine are San Polo and Dorsoduro. Whatever you pick, you will enjoy it.

I like to stay as close to St Marks as I can so I'll be there in the early morning and late evening (to listen to the orchestras play), then get outta there during the majority of the day when it's mobbed. Spend the middle part of the day near the Arsenal, Dorsodoro, etc. I also try to stay away from the main street between the train station & St Marks during mid-day.

My favorite is San Palo. But I haven't stayed in all of sections so my favorite is without true knowledge. I quit wanting to stay near Piazza San Marco quite a long while ago as IMO it is nice to be away from the crowds during the day. Venice is a small and very walkable city cinciapril.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I am also looking for suggestions on what part of Venice to stay. It will be DH and me, our 4 year old and our 18 month old and we will be looking for a self catering apartment. So not too crowded but also very walkable (which apparently isnt a prob anywhere). TIA!

We (a group of 6) just came back from Venice. We really liked our apartment because it was slightly away from the crowds yet walkable from San Marco square. Just around the corner was a main street area where you can get fresh fruit and find good restaurants. Good luck!
