Best accomodations for a longer stay in Europe?

We (my wife and I, late 60s) have traveled in Europe a number of times but always on 1-2 week stays. We have stayed mostly in hotels with a few gasthauses or Zimmer Frei thrown in. Now we are contemplating a longer stay, maybe as long as 6 months. We don't want to be in one place the whole time but we might stay about 2 weeks then move to the next place.

We are looking for an economical way to do this. I looked at one website that offered apartments and they were more expensive on a per night basis than hotels. We are talking mostly about covering England, Germany, Austria, And Italy but we are still open to other locations.

I see comments here on Fodors of people who stay in all of the accomodations above. I will appreciate your thoughts on the best deal. We will need a car during that time and you can give me your advice on that too. Thank in advance for your advice.
