Berlin to Salzburg in 2 weeks
We are traveling in the summer for 16 days (less 2 traveling will be 14 days) with our 13 year old son. We will arrive and leave out of Berlin.
We are trying to figure out our itinerary so we can book the hotels:
Our destinations:
Berlin (with a day trip to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp in Oranienburg) 4 day
Dresden (1 day) - to tour the volkswagon factory
Prague (3 days)
Salzburg (with a day trip to Hallstatt - the salt mining town) 3 days
Back to Berlin
Do you think this is way too many cities to travel to for 14 days?
(1) Should we go to Munich? Is it even worth it for a 13 yr old?
(2) Should we go to Vienna since we have a 13 yr old son?
(3) Would the itinerary work? Any suggestions?
(4) Do we will drive or fly or take the train to each destination?
Thank you so much!

It would be too many places for me but if you can see everything you want to see in each location in the allotted time then it will work for you. I'm having a hard time planning everything I want to see in Berlin into a week without Sachsenhausen. I'm going to have to cut out a few things. You're giving Berlin equal weight with Salzburg which has fewer sights.
I'm unclear why you're questioning taking a 13 year old to Vienna and Munich and yet you're taking him to Berlin, Dresden, Prague, and Salzburg. Perhaps you could be more specific about your concerns.

Have you done any research on this? Since you're only going to cities (except Hallstat) it is better to take a train. It would take longer to fly than to take a train except for your final leg back to Berlin.
If you decide on traveling by train you should book them soon to get the best rates.
Next time look at flying into one city and home from another. You'll save time and money. I'm flying into Dresden and home from Berlin. The ticket is the same price and I don't have to get from the Berlin airport to Dresden which would cost more money and take about half a day.

For the car, add the cost of fuel, parking, and should you so choose, insurance. And I think those car times are "ideal" at the very best.
Make sure you can even drive into the Czech Republic with a rental car.
Have you made the plane reservations yet? If not, fly OUT of Munich.

IMHO either Munich or Vienna would be great for a 13 year old with tons of things to do - but not sure you have the time to add either to your itinerary unless you drop or cut back on something else.
Too bad you can't do open jaw tickets - into Berlin and out of Munich or Vienna.

If just going to those cities I'd take the train - if wanting to explore more rural areas like Saxon Switzerland or Bavaria outside of Munich I'd drive - for lots about trains in those areas check out these IMO superb sites: www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com. For schedules go to the German Railways web site that has schedules for trains all over Europe and is the easiest such site I have seen to use.
stay in Hallstatt rather than doing a day trip that takes 3 hours or so each way - a great area - there is much more to Hallstatt than Salt Mines, which are about the same down in them as the famous ones near Salzburg - Salzburg getting its name from "Salt City" I believe (but not sure) - Hallstatt sits on a placid Alpine lake with views of snow-drenches peaks all around - it needs at least a day to be savored not quickly rushed thru IMO.
The Sound of Music Country just east of Salzburg and easily reached by one-hour in a postal bus from Salzburg is a great day trip - the Lake District where much of the famous film was filmed - "Edelwisss, Edleweiss"...

Yes to go to Dachau if nothing else - a sobering experience that even a 13 year old can appreciate. And the BMW museum may interest younger folk.
