Berlin to ?

Hi there,

my DD is studying in Berlin, and i would like to meet her there at the end of July. We have about a week before returning to NYC. she will have weekended in brussels and Prague, so i would love some suggestions on a peaceful place to spend time together before back to the grind. DD is 21 and i am not looking for strenuous activity. good food, scenery and spa sounds nice!

thank you,
E~

(or follow Angela Merkel to the spa island of Ischia off Naples, but it will be a lot more expensive than Poland in July)

Amsterdam? A mellow place for sure with North Sea Beaches just a short train ride away - meeting for youth from all over Europe. About 5 hour train ride from Berlin.

Or Switzerland via Munich?

For lots on trains check www.seat61.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com (check this site's free online European Planning & Rail Guide for lots of places to go by train.)

Cheap flights can take you cheaply to anywhere in Europe.

Where have you been in Germany? How about a nice drive through Northern Germany? Are you flying home from Berlin?

we have spent a few day in Munich after our time in Austria. we will be flying home from Berlin. I was thinking a trip to amsterdam might be fun... Switzerland has always been a dream of mine. but the lakes, the scenery, not just another city.
i thought i would stay in Berlin for 2 nights, giving DD time to show me around her favorite places. that would leave us with 4-5 night to see something new!

thanks,
E~

Everybody's darling, the Berner Oberland, is just a 80 minute hop from Berlin. You can fly nonstop to Berne.
It does come with a price, though. 250 return would be considered a cheap fare.
Easyjet flies for less to Geneva and Basel. Zurich is also often a bargain.
But any airport but Berne makes it a bit more time-consuming to get to the real mountains.

Why leave Germany? There are many locations to visit, easy to get to and wonderful scenery. You can visit Dresden, while there, visit Meissen. Visit the mountains south of Dresden in the Annaberg-Buchholz area. Go to Nuremberg, Visit Munich, Go to Rheintal or Moseltal. Go to the Black Forest.

Germany has many spa hotels in beautiful scenic areas.

Make it easy on yourself by just going to the station and hop a train within Germany. Very in expensive and less time consuming than leaving Germany. And it is easy to return to Berlin to fly home.

You might like Bad Wilsnack very easy to get to from Berlin, right in the countryside, the spa is salt water and worth at least a half day just chilling out.

Baden-Baden -one of the most famous spas in Europe a century or so ago with the royals, rich and famous flocking here -is still a popular spa and a nice one too. Well posed for day trips to many neat places -Black Forest, Freiburg, Strasbourg in France is very close, etc:

The area around and to the north of Berlin has the nickname 'land of a thousand lakes'. You might take some time to explore those (and hence Bad Wilsnack might be a stop there), because that whole area is about peace and quiet and hiking in nature. Just google 'lakes north of Berlin' and you will also get all the lakes that are part of the Berlin district and this:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/26/tr...-of-lakes.html

There are a lot of resorts there that make the best of the opportunities nature offers, and best of all you wouldn't have to travel that far from Berlin.

Or you could travel further afield and look for the bigger spa towns like Baden-Baden or Wiesbaden, from where you could zip up the Rhine easily as a day trip. Wiesbaden has the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Therme and the casino, and Mainz is just across the river, a short train ride away. An elegant town which is not very touristy.

TLX is right in the thick of Berlin proper - it would be foolish to relocated to a hotel near it when the one you have is probably realtively close to it by public transit or taxi.

I agree with Pal, you are pretty close to Tegel with the hotel you have and can easily get a taxi, so no need to change. But if you are a worrywart you could check out Hotel Am Borsigturm, which is a business hotel just a little to the north of the airport. There are possibly hotels even closer but I can vouch for that hotel as quite a nice one.

I assume OP needs that hotel to spend one additional night in Berlin AFTER that trip from Berlin to X.
Both, the area around Kurfürstendamm and Zoo station (where also the Waldorf is located) as well as the several hotels near Central station (where you might arrive from your trip to X if you go by train) have easy public transport connections to Tegel airport. Or just €20 by taxi.

Since you will be traveling in end of July (which should be hot, hopefully), you can also check out the "Imperial seaside resort towns" of Bansin, Ahlbeck and Heringsdorf on the island of Usedom.

If tired of cost of living in Germany head to Marienbad (Mariánské Lázně today) or Karlovy Vary just over the border in Czech Republic and famous old spa towns too - at a fraction of the cost I would think over German spas.

Visit Dresden and awesome Saxon Switzerland from either base.
