Berlin Layover

Hey guys,

So i'm flying to Rome, and on the way i have a 5.5 hour layover in Berlin (Tegel).

I get in at 7:30am and the flight to Rome is at 1pm. This would also be on a Sunday.

Any advice on the quickest way to get into the city centre and back would be appreciated. I would love to see what is left of the Wall (last time i saw it was in 2008).

Thanks fellow travelers!
Eric

with such short time I'd take a taxi from Tegel ribght to the largest remaining stretch of Berlin Wall - the East Side Gallery, where artists from all over have executed pointed images on the wall related to its grim history.

Otherwise from Tegel I believe you have to take a bus to a U-Bahn station and that would take a long time to get to the best vestige of the Wall.

tell the driver to drive by the newly rehabbed Parliament, Holocaust Memoril by the Brandenburg Gate and you'll at least see some of the very famous things in Berlin.

Another intact stretch of Wall though much smaller in length is at Bernauer Straat where there is a memorial - this is significantly closer to Tegel Airport.

A taxi and they are very readily available outside all of the Tegel terminals would be your fastest way into town.

Definitely take a taxi. The bus and U-bahn would take too much time, especially if you're unfamiliar with Berlin. Make a list of a few things you'd like to see, even passing by in a taxi and figure out the best route. Keep the same taxi for the entire time in the city; just have him wait for you while you explore some of the East Side Gallery.

If you go to the Holocaust Memorial (as suggested above), take a few minutes to walk into it as you don't get the full effect from the street or the perimeter of the stelae.

Another sight could be Check Point Charlie, again, it's just a drive by with a quick stop.

Have your boarding pass before you leave the terminal.

I have to say that IMO the INSIDE of the Checkpoint Charlie museum is worth a stop if you feel you have the time to do so.

There is NO U or S-Bahn direct connection with Tegel Everything is done either by so-called "express bus" or by taxi.
