Bellagio - ferries schedule and dining options
We will stay at Bellagio for 3 days in early September, we won't have a car and I was wondering how do people move around lake Como when they don't have a car? How to reach Villa Carlotta for example? How to reach the restaurants in the evening? I read that ferries stop running after dark. What time exactly? Are we limited to Bellagio for all our dinners? What are recommendations for Bellagio dining? It'll be my husband's birthday, looking for a special place.

People move from place to place in the midlake region (near Bellagio) by boat. You can pay per ride, but you will probably want a midlake daypass. Some boats from Bellagio stop directly in front of Villa Carlotta. As an alternate, the Cadenabbia stop has frequent service from Bellagio and is walkable to Villa Carlotta.
If you input "Bellagio, Italy" at maps.google.com, you will see the main ferry routes, as well as Cadenabbia and Villa Carlotta directly across the lake.

There are also taxis and an occasional bus.

At the site referenced above, in Lake Como section,
www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/c_orari.asp you see several boats. First thing you will need to recognize is how they are organized.
The first two, Como-Colico for slow boat #1, and fast board #2 runs the entire upper lake then the left leg of the lake Como. While it serves the most ports, it stops running around 6pm. If you can use the fast boat, it saves travel time, but would not be a scenic ride.
The #3 middle lake shuttle serves more ports than #5 car ferry, but it stops running around 7pm. It is useful for day time visit to mid-lake area complementing the Como-Colico boats.
#4 serves the right leg of the lake to Lecco. I have not found a need to use this boat.
#5 car ferry serves larger towns in the mid-lake using car ferries. The boat runs frequently and until late ~10pm. So if you watch out for the return schedule, you can have dinner at towns served by the car ferries and make it back to Bellagio. Reading the schedule can be tricky for first timers, so be sure to check the return schedule.
