Thanks to some wonderful folks who responded to my previous request, we have decided to stay in B&Bs while in Ireland. We have the most recent copy of the B&B listings from the Irish Tourist Board, but so many places look interesting! I need to know if anyone can suggest some good places to stay in Dublin, Killarney, Ring of Kerry area, Kilkenny, Blarney, Waterford, and Galway? Any details would be appreciated.

We recently spent 2 weeks in B&B's in Ireland.

Galway: Try The Dormers run by Ms. Maureen Tarpey.. located on Whitestrand Road, Lower Salthill, Galway. telelphone 091 585034. Her's is a bungalow with 6 ensuite rooms with TV. It is walking distance to beach and to city.

Killarney: Lohan's Lodge run by Mike and Cathy Lohan. a delightful couple with a beautiful home with 5 en suite rooms with TV. Located on Tralee Road, Killarney. Tel 064 33871 Fax: 064 33871.
You won't regret.

Another idea for you is to get to the first one you are going to stay and your hostess will call ahead for you in the next town and recommend. We did this the last 3/4 of our trip and each one got better. The owners have a wonderful network and will only refer you to the best ones.

Sounds like a similar trip that I'm planning for October - am also interested in B&B's and even castles for that trip

We did the fly and drive trip to Ireland in May '95. While we thought we had place in mind to stay as we wnt along, what actually happened was that we were forarded along from town to town by each B&B's owner. Want to stay in Killarney, they know just the person, and so on. Made the whole experience quite an adventure and they were all terrific.

My recommendation regarding castles--we wanted to stay in a castle but from the States were told that we had to stay two nights. Once we got to Ireland, one of our hosts arranged the castle stay and it was amazing, complete with the Waterford decanter filled with Irish Mist.

See Kilkenny Castle and don't miss the shops across the way. They had the best quality merchandise of the trip. Also, go to Cashel/Chasel Rock to get a true feeling of awe. Powerscourt outside of Dublin is worthwhile too.

B and Bs are the only way to go--great variety and a wonderful chance to talk with the local people. Just returned from Ireland and followed strong suggestions to use Town and Country B and B book. Because we were traveling in high season (August), many of the B and Bs were full--especially in the more isolated places (that's hard to imagine since there are so very many of them). After being disappointed two nights, we would stop early to mid-afternoon at a Tourist ffice--in almost every town and for the extremely reasonable price of two pounds (about three dollars) they would call as many B and Bs as was necessary to find one for us. We'd pick a town and I would rank the B and Bs right on the pages. They called in the order requested and it worked out fine. The Tourist Office gets 10%25 of the night's lodging fee which you pay directly to them and the rest is paid to the B and B directly. One night when we waited until 8 PM to start looking (it was light until 9:45PM), one B and B owner called 25 homes for us and finally found one with a vacancy (we were outside Galway near the ferry to the Aran slands). Enjoy--it's a super country to visit.
