Because of $100 I can't buy insurance
I've been trying to get travel insurance from Travel Guard. Unfortunately, I sent the owner a $100 deposit on her apt back in Jan. Since we weren't renting until August I thought I'd get insurance closer to then. After all, the deposit was so small and she didn't even cash it until recently. But TG says you must get coverage within 15 days of the deposit. She will send me back the deposit. Is there any way I can get coverage now? When I went to send in the $ to TG there was a lot about defrauding the company, etc.

In my experience unfortunately TG (and all travel ins. co.'s) refuse to cover you for medical evacuation and trip interruption for example if you don't purchase it within the 15 day period. But this is only if you have a preexisting medical condition. If you don't then you should still be able to purchase after the 15 days. What's the travel insurance coverage you wanted to purchase?

Thanks for the response. I just want to cover the price of the apt. We're using frequent flyer miles but if we have to change dates we'd probably have to pay to dollar for last minute tickets. But because our tickets were "free" TG won't pay anything for airfare. My husband had a heart attack in March but of couse TG won't cover his preexisting condition because of that little $100 check I wrote in Jan. What a business!

You can buy just medical insurance for multiple trips but I'm not sure of the costs. This kind of policy covers you for 1 year. Here is a link to the companies that offer it.

If you don't need it for an entire year this link has 1 other company listed that the above link doesn't.

Check with insuremytrip.com. I think you probably CAN get insurance, but the insurance won't include pre-existing conditions. If you have an accident or serious illness between the time that you buy the insurance and when your trip commences, you will be covered as long as a pre-exisiting condition is not involved.
I learned a lot about this recently when I submitted a claim for a fall in January that forced us to cancel flights to the east coast in March. The company paid, but then I needed to buy insurance for a trip in December. The insurance company said I would not be covered for anything related to the original injury because I had filed a claim over it but that I would be covered for anything new.
Good luck!

You can still get Travel Guard TI to cover your apt rental. I think TravelGuard has a year-long frequent traveler medical policy (Platinum with $10,000 accident/sickness med expenses/insured; $100,000 medical evacuation among other benefits). I don't think it has the pre-existing clause. Ask to be sure.
You can check out other TI companies (www.insuremytrip.com) for more options.

You can check all the options suggested, but there are very clear actuarial reasons for this, and not just related to health insurance, but any kind. An insurance company cannot insure people if they allow them to insure at any time, because then people wait until they have a problem and only then buy the insurance. This can related to any reason for trip cancellation, not just for health insurance reasons. You yourself stated the exact issue, but probably didn't think of it from the insurer's viewpoint -- you thought you'd wait until you actually were going until you were willing to buy the insurance because you wanted to wait and see if you thought you'd need it.
