bbc radio 4 visits Fleetwood near Blackpool

For those who can visit and catch up on programmes on BBC Radio this is a funny programme featuring Mark Steel winding up an audience about the town of Fleetwood. It is the first in a series of six towns visited where the eccentricities of the place and its local customs are exposed, Not for everyone, but provides a very different insight into some of the places around Britain.

Thanks Steve.

So much material in Fleetwood.

Same for Wigan and Wilmslow, they deserve their own series alone.

Mark Steel came to Otley where I live last year, very impressed with both his preparation (it is a pretty small town) and is real interest in what the audiance could tell him about the place. I also like his process of describing his various stand-ins, sit-ins and political protest. His attack on the Apple store, with all the pictures, stickers, and the tax avoidence. The Radio 4 shows are very toned down.

What kind of 'rock' does Fleetwood have - is it different than say Blackpool Rock?

My wife did her articles in Leeds. Otley Rd always made us laugh as a road of life.

Students would start off living at the bottom of the road in Leeds centre and eventually progress through their career up Otley Rd.

They knew they had really made it they finally in later life reached the dizzy heights of a rambling house in Otley.

"Whens he doing Morecambe" - will he be able to get an audience together - they all seem to have left the place?

Stevelyon

Aren't you aware of the M6 Linkroad, making access to the playground of the North much easier...

The way things are going at Bloomfield Road, it'll soon be Blackpool near Fleetwood (wink)!

I love Mark Steele, and I can well imagine that his live material is more "edgy" than what goes out on Radio 4.

I do have a tendency to mix him up though with Mark Thomas, who does the same sort of thing, though not based on a particular place, so far as I know:
