Bayern Ticket

Would like some confirmation that I'm looking at this DB Bayern ticket correctly. For a 1st Class Bayern Ticket for two the cost is 56E; for 2nd Class it's 31E for the day. After 9:00 am the discounted fare (with Bayern Ticket) from Regensburg to Garmisch is 56E for 1st and 31E for 2nd. Posted fares for this route without Bayern Ticket are 139E and 87.40E respectively. If I'm looking at this correctly; that would be 27E savings on 1st Class or a 25.40 E for 2nd Class. (Regensburg to Garmisch; after 9:00 am)

Comments or corrections?

Correct, we always buy the Bayern ticket. I am never ready to go before 9 so works great for us.

Hi again barrcoop,

The only restriction (other than the time) is that you can only use the Bayern Ticket on regional trains -- no ICE or CE or the like. Looks like there are only regional trains between Regensburg & Munich, so you'll be fine.

Have fun as you plan!

I think OP thinks he needs to buy "discounted tickets" in addition to the Bayern ticket.

But you only need the Bayern Ticket for 2 people - you don't buy anything else. It's a day pass.

Regensburg - Garmisch

in 2nd class:
non-restricted single "flex" fare: 43.70 x 2 = 87.40
Bayern Ticket 2nd class for Two: 31.00
Savings: 56.40

in 1st class:
non-restricted single "flex" fare: 69.90 x2 = 139.80
Bayern Ticket 1st class for TWO: 56.00
Savings: 83.80

Hi!

That's correct. I assumed I needed to purchase a Bayern Ticket plus discounted tickets for my trip from Regensburg to Garmisch trip. If Cowboy is correct; I'll pull the trigger today!

Barry: I would advise you NOT to pull any triggers now. There is NO reason to pre-purchase a Bayern Ticket. You can buy it on the day of travel or the night before at the station for the same price. It is NOT refundable if you buy it now and have a change of plans later.

The other thing is that for travel from Munich's main station to Regensburg's main station, the Bayern Ticket isn't the cheapest option - you can do the same trip on the same trains with a "Servus Ticket" - buy it at the station too - for just €26.

(The Bayern Ticket however is useful if you intend to use other public transport within these cities.)

So many things to think about! It's great. I love to research and be as prepared as possible. Thank you. Now; I do know that:-

1. I'll be in Regensburg (guaranteed) the day before I depart from there for Garmisch
2. I want to purchase 1st class.
3. Not sure I want to get shut out of 1st class by waiting until the day of, or day before.

Thoughts?

"1. I'll be in Regensburg (guaranteed) the day before I depart from there for Garmisch"

That's what your plans say. There is always a chance that something else will intervene... sickness, injury, train strike... not wishing anything but the best for you of course, but even though you like to do things right now, things do sometimes happen, and in case they do, you can save yourself €56 by postponing purchase until the day of travel.

The RE trains to Regensburg are likely to be double-decker trains which look like this:

http://www.bahnbilder.de/1024/der-re...ber-709259.jpg

"2. I want to purchase 1st class."

The essential difference is that there are normally 3 seats across rather than 4. Comfort levels are otherwise similar. You can see for yourself the very minor differences in this video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JZZ3oV5vxA

The first two compartments with a "1" on the glass doors are first class compartments with dark blue seats in the double-decker train. The camera then moves downstairs and into another car and takes a parting shot at the 2nd class compartment with a sort of sea-foam green upholstery.

These trains have 2nd class seating both upstairs and down - don't assume that upstairs is for 1st-class-only compartments.

"Not sure I want to get shut out of 1st class by waiting until the day of, or day before."

In this regard, it does not matter at all when you buy your ticket. Your ticket does not guarantee a reservation on the regional trains (which you must use with the Bayern Ticket.) It is in fact impossible to reserve a seat on a regional train. If there are 50 1st-class seats on your train, it doesn't matter how many 1st-class tickets (or 1st-class Bayern tickets) have been sold for your train, whether 10, 100, or 1000... The only way to ensure you get a 1st class seat is for you to sit down in a 1st class seat before someone else does. That means you arrive early at the station and get on your train early. That's all there is to it.

Same train configuration from Regensburg to Garmisch?

All of your input is greatly appreciated and has helped me out immeasurably.

I imagine you'll have similar trains for Regensburg-Munich. I believe Munich - Garmisch is on trains like the one in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4n5qho6Hlc

The video below introduces the train (new trains and new to this route a few years ago) to the German public and takes you through the seating areas of these trains near the beginning. At about 2:03 a DB rep in the first-class seating area begins a spiel on the features of these trains in German; you get a very quick peek.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbW9xkewIO4

These trains are essentially a sleek, efficient "subway-style" train.

Regional trains also have multi-purpose areas for bikes, strollers etc.

There is extreme variety around the country when it comes to regional trains, but all of the newer ones will more or less be in the general ballpark of what you see here. You are not going to be riding the Orient Express when you use the Bayern Ticket, whether it's first or second class. Bring your own food/wine/beer and have a picnic while you're underway.

No matter what you say about them, there's always an exception... This 1st-class seating area on a double-decker train actually seats 4 across:

Amazing info as usual from Fussganger! For info on discounted tickets check www.seat61.com (but not as good as Fuss' for your question) - general info on German trains - www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.

Again thanks to Fuss for those links to newer German trains.
