Bavaria vs Black Forest for base

Hello,

We are trying to choose which area would be the best to stay in during our trip to Southern Germany, Bavaria Region or the Black Forest Region. I would love to hear which area people like the best and why

Thanks for your help.

"Best" in what respect? Please tell us a bit more about your interests, travel style, etc. otherwise this is impossible to answer...
Will you have a car or use public transport? Biking? Hiking? Boat rides?
Beer or wine?
Mountains or Hills?
Big cities? Small towns? Countryside?
History, culture, museums?
Easy hops across borders?
Foodies?
Spas?
Nightlife? Clubbing, quiet pubs, or fancy restaurants...?

etc...

Bavaria Region.

Why? Because of the Berchtesgaden area which is one of the most beautiful locales in Europe IMO.

(This would include the nearby Salzkammergut.)

HI S,

The Black Forest gives you the opportunity to visit Alsace.

Bavaria gives you the opportunity to visit the Salzkammergut.

What are your interests?

BF (not really just a forest) is small-town/village country, best done by car, for hikes, lakes, chilling out, not much by way of museums and culture and fine dining and such, so it lends itself to occasional drives out into the real world to bigger cities.

Bavaria can be done by train and coaches/buses, has nice countryside also but is dominated by the metropolis of Munich, the nearby mountains, and many important cities/targets in the region with museums and castles etc..

So - what's your speed?

We will have a car, we would like to stay in a villa near a small town, we enjoy both wine and beer, just looking for a base to check out some small towns, do some small hikes etc. We are not interested in seeing any museums on this part of our trip. Is it possible to base oneself in Bavaria and visit the Black Forest? We will be spending some time in Munich and a week in one of the other regions.
