Bavaria day trip via car

We are planning a 14 day trip into Munich and out of Budapest in late Nov. We have purchased a car that we will pick up in Munich and will have it to drive around for a day before we ship it home and join a river cruise in Nuremburg. We will spend four nights based in Munich to cut down on moving around to different hotels. What I am looking for are suggestions for a one day , driving day trip to one or two quaint towns to visit Christmas markets, also would like to have a portion of the driving to be on the Autobahn so that we can experience that as well. I think time wise, we would leave after rush hour and would plan to return to Munich in the evening. We have done the castles previously and since we will be river cruising I think we would prefer to go somewhere that is more inland. Any of you Germany experts have any suggestions?

Aside from the world famous Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, there is a really great, small Medieval Christmas market right outside of Nuremberg in Anwanden (Zirndorf) called Weihnachtsmarkt Gut Wolfgangshof.

Which BMW did you get?

I think the Christmas markets all start in December. Head to Garmisch, you will get small villages and the autobahn. Very doable for the day.

They only give you one day to drive the new car?

The Christmas Markets start November 29 this year.

They only give you one day to drive the new car?

Most people take a few weeks after they take delivery.

OP, if you're not there during that time then a drive to Rothenburg ob der Tauber will get you some Autobahn time.

I have been checking various websites concerning 2013 Christmas markets, and it looks like the main Munich market starts on Nov 25 this year. Sparkchaser,no we can drive the car around Europe for up to five months, but unfortunately we can only allot a day and a half of driving and still make all of the rest of our trip fit into our pre-holiday time frame. DH is not a great lover of driving vacations anyway, esp in Europe where there is excellent public transportation. Also, doesn't not want to drive it in snow and ice. The main focus for picking up the car in Munich is the experience of actually getting the car, exactly as you ordered, fresh from the factory.

What about Augsburgh? Not exactly small town, but is that an easy drive? Any quaint villages along the way?

It's a cool experience to witness.
