Bavaria and Northern Italy in March?

I was considering a trip to Bavaria and Northern Italy during my kids' (boys aged 14 & 16) spring break in mid-March. Is that just a horrible time to go? We already have a busy summer planned, so was hoping to sneak away the only other time they can get away. My husband's family is from Heidelberg, so would want to take an excursion there. Otherwise was thinking Bavaria and then in to Northern Italy (Milan, Lakes Region). I know it will be cold, but am wondering how limited we will be with available activities at that time. Big trip, so don't want it to be wasted because our timing is bad!
