Bavaria Alps or Black Forest.. Advice please....
Hi,
I am traveling to Munich with hubby for a short vacation. We'll be around from March 9 to 13. This is our first trip to Germany & we would like to know how best we can plan the trip. We'll be visiting Welt & probably roam around in Munich city. We would also like to do a day-long trip. What would be the best better option for it, the Bavarian Alps or the Black Forest? We plan to drive, so would there be any road blocks or restrictions en route?
And, is the winter really harsh around this time? Where can I find info about the weather updates and road conditions? I have been googling around quite a bit but did not get much information.
Thanks.
AJ

That's a no brainer. The Alps.
The Black Forest is a much longer drive. Not really a day trip.
Weatherwise, you can search sites like weather.com for Mittenwald (Germany), Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany) or Füssen (Germany).

I agree with Cowboy!
Garmisch, Mittenwald is a short ride from Munich. Stay over and vist the Ludwig castle in Fussen the next day.
Yes there will be snow in the alpine areas but they keep the main roads clean.

Alps for sure. You probably will not encounter a major winter storm at that time, but there could very well be snow in the mountains. Roads should be clear.
The German site for the weather channel is de.weather.com. It's in German but you should be able to interpret it fairly easily.

Thank you all! So I'm taking off Black Forest from my list. I'm still in two minds about Alps. I was thinking it might be a good choice given that it is just a 2 hr drive from Munich. Or, as John suggested, we would drive to Garmisch.
Any other places near Munich that we could squeeze in to our itinerary? I wouldn't mind skipping the Alps altogether if I have a better option.
Thanks,
AJ

Garmisch IS in the Alps.
You could squeeze in all kinds of other things - what do you like?
Salzburg gives you mountains and a terrific small city (even without the ubiquitous Sound of Music and Mozart kitsch)

I agree...the ALPS! My favorite area in Bavaria is Berchtesgaden, less than two hours from Munich. The scenery is beyond gorgeous. Salzburg would also be a good option if you are looking for more of a small city atmosphere.

Hi
My husband and I are travelling to Zurich in July. We will hire a car and have 6 days to explore Blackforest or the Bavarian Alps. What is a better option? We are not much of hikers, enjoy walks and nature.

Wow, I like when a thread is resurrected!
Since you seen the Swiss Alps then I would suggest the Black Forest for a change. (although I cannot get enough Alps be it Swiss, Germany, Austria, Italy......(
