I enjoyed a few nights there years ago Maybe my TR can shed some light on things you may want to do. If you are interested in art, I say it is a must to give it at least a day or two.

Interests for a short stay are walking, parks, art galleries (Thank you), photography, a comfortable hotel close to the station, a Swiss local/regional restaurant for dinner.
While we have been through both towns by train years ago, we do not recall the comparison.
Thank you for any further thoughts.

Hi again,
With your interests, I think Basel will be a better fit. There are a LOT of museums in Basel (don't have the exact figures, but it's significant), plus the lovely riverwalk, and a very interesting and historic old town.
Like most Swiss cities, hotels in Basel are quite expensive, with (for example) a 2-star near the univeristy running 120 chf for a single -- the Hotel Rochat.
Here's a link to the Basel tourism site:

Bern has interesting architecture & history --
Have fun as you plan!

We've lived in Basel for the past several years and love it. There is always something to do. If you can give more specifics on your tastes in art, architecture and music (modern, classical, etc) and food, plus when you will be here, we can make some more targeted recommendations. For example, you might enjoy taking the Night Watchman's guided tour (available in English) in the historic St. Alban district. Or perhaps you will be here during the popular autumn fair (Herbstmesse) or even during Christmas market season.
I'm partial to Basel, but like Bern very much too. However I find the arcaded streets in its historic center too crowded on Saturdays, even off season. IMO, Bern is much more pleasant to stroll on a weekday.
Both cities have a lot to offer and are very attractive but in different ways.

I've been to both cities several times.
Go to Bern if you are a Paul Klee fan. They've recently opened a musueum dedicated to his work.
My first trip to Europe was on a national holiday in Bern. Tha Alphorns were out. Flyers were passed out and the entire crowd sang 'what a friend we have in Jesus', either in French or German.
That said, I like Basel a tad bit better. I like the view of the river and the town as a walking town.

LOL.
At first we thought a train journey from Brussels to Murren Switzerland was a little too long for one day.
So we tried to book a night in Strasbourg, but alas the European Government had seemingly taken all the available beds in town that night. Then we thought Mulhouse, Basel or Bern.
However some of you have now convinced us to leave at 0737 on an IC Train from Brussels, sit back, relax and arrive in Murren a day earlier and well before sunset
We will also undoubtedly save on accomodation cost that night when compared with Basel and Bern offerings.
Thanks for your guidance.
