Base in Austria: Lake Region or Salzburg
Hello! We are traveling to Austria in August for two and a half days (I know too short and busy). I have booked a hotel in Salzburg, but now I am thinking it may be better to book a hotel in the lake district. My husband and I much prefer the lake to a larger city. We are considering Hallstadtt or St. Wolfgang.
We would like to:
-see parts of Salzburg
-stop by Linz since this is where my mom was born
-hike
-enjoy time by the water
-have easy access to trains
At the end of our time in Austria we will be leaving via train to Munich. Based upon the information above, would you suggest keeping our base in Salzburg or relocating to Hallstadtt or St. Wolfgang? If relocate, which town would be better?
Thank you!

Hallstatt and St Wolfgang are both very charming, but I think Salzburg probably makes the most sense because of transport connections. St Wolfgang is the closer of the two by public transport, but you still have to add on the best part of an hour to get to Salzburg onto the time for your journey to Linz, for instance (approx 1.5 hours I believe), and again for the return journey.
Do you have two and a half days not counting any travel time getting there? Is there any chance yu could squeeze a bit more time in? And how much did you want to see in Salzburg? Ideally you would have a full day each for Linz, Salzburg and the chosen lake

St Wolfgang or nearby St Gilgen are perfect bases for the main lakes, like Lake Wolfgang and also for Salzburg (only an hour or so by postal bus or car) and also Hallstatt - to me Hallstatt if fabulous and on its own tiny lake but too remote from the lake district or Salzburg - St Wolfgang is right smack in the middle of Salzburg and Hallstatt - Salzburg can be seen in a full day - there is a lot to see but the real site IMO is this wondrous Baroque pastel-hued city itself and not individual sites though there are some major churches and a castle to trek up to.
