Base for hiking in Lower Engadine

Base for hiking in Lower Engadine
I am asking for suggestions for both a city and hotel as a hiking base in the Lower Engadine,
As hikers, my husband and I will be reliant on public transportation (local trains, bus & post bus) to reach trailheads or return from hikes to this base location. We are not committed to specific hikes. Our goal is to be in one place so we can hike 3-5 days in the region during the second week of September.
Our budget is 200-250 CHF per night with breakfast, preferably ensuite, but this is not a requirement. Comfortable and clean with a good breakfast are most important followed by easy access to transportation to head out for our day of walking/hiking.
As I stated earlier, we are not committed to specific hikes. Depending upon weather and if we are not to footsore from the previous two weeks we'd like to walk 10-15 km daily. We will be coming to this region after spending time in the Valais and Jungfrau areas of Switzerland. Our arrival date is not established with a probable arrival on 12 September. We must be in Milan on 18 September for our flight home on the 19th.

Scuol is the best base, *the* hub or public transportation and the only small town with a large enough variety of groceries, shops, restaurants etc. for a time of five nights.
There are a few hotels right by the train station Scuol-Tarasp and the gondola station, which is a 15 minutes uphill walk from the town, but there is frequent public transportation by bus from and to the town. So, if you'd rather stay in a not so isolated (after you'r back from your hikes) location, then pick a hotel in the town. Please note that there's an upper and lower old town and a relatively busy horizontal street inbetween with most groceries/shops, bakeries, restaurants, hotels and the excellent spa (and bus stops).
As for hotels, maybe in your price range are some 3star hotels: Üja/Traube, Astras (direct passageway to spa), more basic is Crusch Alba (but cosy, rustic, highly recommended also). All these are right on that 'main' street. In the lower part of the town (picturesque!) I'd recommend Hotel Engiadina, very charming. Right by the train station is Hotel Bellaval, good value and with very good restaurant.
