Barcelona to Valencia at the end of July

I have 8 days off at the end of July and want a nice mix of culture, entertainment and beaches, somewhere in Europe. Small budget. 2 x 25 year olds.

I am thinking of flying into Barcelona, staying for 4 nights, catching the train down to Valencia and staying here for 3/4 nights- flying out of Valencia (very cheap one-way flights available).

Does anyone have any recommendations of places to stop on the way- maybe Tarragona or Peniscola? Or most importantly - would it worth stopping anywhere? I don't know the route at all.

Also- Any recommendations of things to do in Barca/Valencia?

Places to stay? We were considering a hostel style base for Barca to meet some people and a more upmarket hotel in valencia (with a pool and terrace.. some time to relax at the end of the week)

Any advice at all here would be fab!

Thanks, Jess
