We (family of 4, daughters are in mid 20's) are flying into Barcelona mid-july. We have already rented an apartment there for one week. Any input on how to get to Madrid in 6 days?
Thinking of flying to Granada and then renting a car and making our way to Madrid OR renting a car when we leave Barcelona and drive towards Zaragoza stopping in towns along the way then dropping car off at airport and spending 2 nights in Madrid before heading back to New York... tentatively staying at the Emperador (picked for it's rooftop pool.) and it seems close to the Malasana neighborhood. Any suggestions?

If heat doesn't bother you I'd fly to Granada and spend 2 nights, then train or bus to Sevilla for 4 nights. Note: it will be hot in Andalucia in mid-July!
But exactly how many days do you have between Barcelona and Madrid? Is there a reason why you only have 2 nights for Madrid?
We have apartment til noon on Sunday and we leave the following Sunday late afternoon from Madrid. I booked Friday and Saturday in Madrid just to have the weekend covered . . . can always be changed since there is no cancellation fee. I was looking at towns like Toledo and Albarracin and Cuenca ... (how are the roads?) if we drove across. As far as I can tell there are not many flights to granada from Barcelona.
I go back and forth with the route... Flying, hot, crowded or leisurely, a bit cooler, and off the beaten track... Or am I looking at this all wrong?
