Barcelona to Girona: Rent a Car or just take the train?
Traveling to Spain late August. After 4 nights in Barcelona we're planning 1 full-day (2 nights) in Girona, before taking the train to Madrid. The plan is a Saturday morning car rental from downtown Barcelona, to be returned Sunday morning at the Girona airport, and the idea was driving along the coast north of Barcelona.
A small, automatic car would be well over $100 for one day (I checked several companies)...
...Question is, is it even worth it?.... We could stay in Barcelona for most of Saturday, and take the last, 7pm train to Girona. Or spend that Saturday in Girona, making it a 2 full-day stay. I tend to choose the 2nd idea, hoping Girona in the weekend has much to offer...
Any opinion? Thanks.

BTW, that 7 pm (or rather 6:50) train is not totally trustworthy so it seems, it shows up on the screen for Sat., August 30, but when downloading the PDF it's not there, the last train is at 12:44 pm....

I'm sure the August schedule hasn't been loaded yet. I see trains from Barcelona to Girona every 30 to 60 minutes so I wouldn't worry about the schedule.
If you drive along the coast you won't get much sightseeing in Girona as you'll probably want to stop en route.
I would take the train. It's a short trip (40 minutes) and I'm sure the cost will be much less than a rental car.

We had the whole of Saturday planned for that drive, and then Sunday in Girona (after returning the car at the airport, which is nearby). That was the original plan.... Monday morning we take the train to Madrid.

I misunderstood and thought that the drive and Girona were in one day.
You might want to consider that it's a weekend in August and the coast will be packed - roads and beaches. I see you live in Chicago so you might not have experience with weekend beach traffic. A nightmare on Saturday morning and Sunday evening and in between as well!
Sorry about the duplicate post - something went funky with the site.
