Barcelona to Cinque Terre - what to do in between?

Barcelona to Cinque Terre - what to do in between?
Doing some early pre planning here... looking at Summer 2019, but Im obsessive and cant not research when I have an idea! 
We plan to start our 2 week trip in Barcelona and end the trip at Cinque Terre. It will be me, the bf, and his 12 yr old son. We plan to do train travel from point to point.
Originally the idea was to follow the coast through France, stopping at a few towns along the way. Recently I came across a transit map of Europe and learned that we can take a Ferry from Barce to Sardinia (and then on to the port near Rome). This was not on my radar at all and now I'm torn.
Going to Sardinia would probably be less travel time overall and have more time spent at each location; a slower vacation. But we would miss out on many of the small towns along the way that we really enjoy. And skip France, I love France. Then again, when would we ever go to Sardinia?
So what would you do? where would you go?

Take the 16:45 direct TGV from barcelona to Marseille, arriving late evening. Lots to see on the way - Mt Canigou in the Pyrenees, the Fort de Salses... www.trainline.eu or www.loco2.com from €49.
Stay a day in Marseille and see the Vieux Port, Eglise Notre Dame de la Garde, and take a ferry to the Chateau d'If, of Monte Cristo fame, France's 18th century Alcatraz...
Perhaps then hop on a train to Nice, from €15 www.trainline.eu or www.loco2.com
Then go Nice-Monterosso booked at www.trenitalia.com from €15 + €19.
