BARCELONA: renting a car to Costa Brava

Hi, We are going to be in Barcelona next week for nearly a weeklong stay. We are thinking of renting a car on the last full day of our trip (a Sunday) and driving up Costa Brava. Maybe Tossa del mar? Haven't quite decided.

We are staying in the city center. Should we go to the airport to rent a car or can we pick up in the city itself? Will it be a challenge driving out of the city on a Sunday morning?

Also any suggestions for the drive itself is welcome!

Thanks

I don't think you should go to the airport. It will waste time, as the airport is on the Southwest side of the city, and you want to go to the Northeast. And, you will pay extra fees for airport pick up that are non-existent in the city.

If you go to the Sants train station, you will find all the majors there. Any good GPS will take you from there to a wide boulevard along the waterfront and directly into the highway heading north. (Have lots of Euros in change for the toll machines. A US credit card will not work.)

For a day trip, I would consider Girona or Figueres. Among the beach cities, I like Cadaques. If you are willing to try to find it, the restaurant Turandot in Begur is extraordinary for lunch.

You need to be careful about which car hire offices are open on a Sunday morning to rent you car and if you can find one that's open, the opening and closing times might not be wide enough to make it a feasible day.

You may have to rent from Saturday evening and return the car on Monday morning. It should be possible to have the car delivered to and collected from your hotel as well.

Thanks, Hertz seems to be open pretty early in SANTS but it costs a bomb!

I don't recommend renting a car for a day-trip from Barcelona. You're far better off, time wise and expense wise, taking the train to Girona or Figueres and forget about driving up the coast.
