Barcelona - Plane to Train timing question?

My friend and I will be in Mallorca for a few days, before flying back to Barcelona and heading directly onto Girona. Can we take the train straight to Girona from BCN, or do we first have to get to Barcelona Sants?
Our flight from Mallorca arrives at BCN at 7:25am. If we have to get to Sants first, is there time to make the 8:25am Ave train for €9.30 out of Barcelona Sants to Girona (There's also an 8:25am Avant for €16.20)?
Or should we give ourselves more time and opt for the 9:25am Avant train for €16.20 train (or even the 9:45am Avant for €16.20)?
Is one train line preferred over the other? And, should we purchase tickets in advance?
We leave in two weeks...our train will be on a Sunday.
