Barcelona - Trying to pick a week to go
We are trying to pinpoint the exact dates for a trip for summer of 2009.
My question is: Do we need to try and avoid the "Sonar Music Festival" that is held in Barcelona each year? I have not been able to find out the exact dates for 2009, but I am guessing it will be around June 19, 20, 21st. Will Barcelona be noticeably more crowded during this festival time?
Any input about this festival would be appreciated! Thanks!

You can find information on the 3-day festival at: http://www.sonar.es/
I doubt that Barcelona will be any more crowded than it is at any other time in June even though it is a large music/multimedia event.

We had a terrible time trying to get a hotel room in Barcelona during Sonar. We didn't notice that the city was particularly crowded, but we had great difficulty finding a room for the nights that our stay coincided with Sonar.

You are wise to check out the city calendar ahead of time - we planned a trip to Barcelona for May 2008 and had a difficult time with hotels. There was a medical convention and not only were rooms hard to get (and this was about five months out!) most of the hotels were jacking up their rates about 50%; combined with the bad exchange rate I was not happy! We ended up renting an apartment which worked out pretty well for us. Good luck with your trip - we loved Barcelona!
