Bamberg Beer Safari

We will be descending upon Bamberg in November (yes, I am an early planner). We have roundtrip tix booked via Munich (cannot change those). Our plan is to head to Bamberg upon arrival in Munich, stay for 5 nights and use Bamberg as a base for our beer safari, then go to Munich for our last 2 nights in Germany.

For those of you who have been to Bamberg before, I see mentions of spending 2 nights there but no discussion about whether or not it's a good base for an extended (5 night) stay. In your opinion, is Bamberg centrally located enough to breweries in that area or would we be better splitting our time between Bamberg and another city?

Also -- we are thinking of renting a flat in Bamberg if we do stay the whole 5 nights. We've contacted this flat via email (and broken German), but have not heard anything back.

Does anyone have recommendations on similar lodging in Bamberg?

One note: Our current fave beer city is Brugge. We have taken 3 separate 1-week visits to Brugge and never get tired of spending our time there. Thought that might give helpful perspective since folks also usually only recommend Brugge for a daytrip or 1-2 night max stay.

beanweb24:
Have never been to Bamberg, but plan a trip there in May 2006! Cannot WAIT to taste Rauchbier.
Have you checked the city's website (available in english) for info on flats? www.stadt.bamberg.de/
click left on 'tourismus', then the american flag for 'stay overnight',
then 'search for flats'...
I've booked vacation apartments several times in german and swiss cities this way...never been disappointed or swindled.
Most sites have lovely pictures, and the TI office in most towns will intervene if language is a problem (I can do deutsch).
I do not have my travel info in front of me just now, but I considered Bamberg only worthy of 3 nights...I'm sure several readers will remind us of lovely towns in the area worth a couple of nights...?Goslar, Quedlinburg, etc
I'll post after my end of May trip...happy planning!

I am already looking forward to your trip report!

I downloaded a copy of the franconia beer guide and that has been a helpful source so far.

I actually did go to the Bamberg website and that's where we found the one flat. I think I need to go back and research more...hadn't thought to contact the tourist office for help - that is a good suggestion.

Goslar, Quedlinburg? Never heard of either! Just googled Quedlinburg and it looks beautiful...thanks.

I did a similar "beer" tour as part of a 3 week trip in 2002. If you research
you will discover a sort of triangular area bordered by Coburg, Bamberg, Kulmbach and Bayreuth is what is referred to as the epicenter of german brewing. There are about 60 braueri in this loose region. We stayed just outside of Bamberg to the sw in a village called Frensdorf. We saw no need to stay in Bamberg proper but spent much time there. Our hotel was called Gasthof Pickle ( not gerhkin)because their name is Pickle. It was a delightful place for about 60 E and a 10 min. drive in. The 11 surviving braueri in Bamberg were a treat to visit. Of course there is much more to see than a stein of rauch bier throughout the area. The Wagner theater in Bayreuth is a sight to behold. Bamberg is also famous famous for the Bamberger Zwiebel which is served locally. We thought it was delicious.
