Balearic Islands - hotel suggestions - off-season weather help

I am interested in small (i.e. fewer than 50 rooms, preferably half that size) beach hotels - hopefully with a pool - on Menorca, or Formentera or the west coast of Mallorca.

What has been your experience with these islands? I can't seem to find much information - which is good, because we don't like concrete, touristy beaches - so a lack of information probably means fewer tourists.

I know August is high season, but it looks like we might not be able to get away until the first two weeks of September. What sort of temperature/rainfall should we expect? Is the sea water warm enough to swim or do we really need a pool to cool off?
Thanks!!!!

J Elaine - usual question - what's your budget?

Sept is a great time to go to the Balearic Islands - we are building a house on Mallorca and the environment at this time is perfect - a lot less kids, still bust enough to feel an atmosphere and the weather and sea are usualluy very good.

The island is very varied - a good web
site for finca, small stylish hotels is The Other Mallorca.

Thank you, I'll try both websites.

My friends and I are in our 40's. We like a bit of comfort, but don't need pampering or luxury. I'd say both ends of the hotel spectrum are out (i.e. youth hostels and the expensive hotels). Small hotels where we can feel like we are in Spain and not at "generic beach resort" are what we want.

Which island do you recomend? Are they very different? Should we island hop, perhaps 5 days each on two of the islands? I've heard that if you stay on the far west coast of Mallorca you'll be away from the built-up touristy area.

Do you need a car? None of us drives a standard shift, so a car would be very expensive and I'm sure it would sit around at the hotel most of the time.

I've checked the airline and the midweek fare from the NY/NJ area to Palma is higher than I thought (over $1500). If we can get a cheaper fare to the mainland, would you recommend doing that and taking the ferry?

Sorry this is so long. Elaine

No, not ferry You can book a flight to Madrid or Barcelona, and then book a separate flight to Palma, they usually run very cheap Also, you can fly to Palma from almost everywhere in Europe, so maybe a flight to London or Ireland would be cheaper for you than flying to Spain mainland

Have you checked out Menorca? We stopped there once on the Windsurf and promptly fell in love with the island.

I loved the ferry. Nice way to unwind and they have a pool on board.

If you are based in the west coast of Mallorca you will need a car. There is a lot to see on the island.

I'd say that 5 days on Minorca is too much.

I'm also interested in hotel suggestions here--higher end with great beach/pool--for a long weekend in mid-September. Thanks!

i just sent some friends to can ai on mallorca in soller.

www.canai.com

there is a sweet historical train that stops ON THE PROPERTY and takes you to beach, port and palma city.

they only rented a car one day to drive around the entire island.

www.innsofspain.com may also have something nice.

www.mallorcaonline.com is a good reference site also.
