Backpacking for the first time in 2014

Jump to last reply

Alright guys! I'm going backpacking in May 2014 for three months...
I was an exchange student in Germany for a year and Japan for 6 weeks so I'm not a newbie to traveling, however I am a newbie to backpacking.
I'm an 18 year old girl, so I'm not too keen on the whole "sleeping under the stars and hunting for food" type of backpacking (haha), but I'm moreso envisioning staying with my host families (I have 2), foreign exchange student friends I've met while in Germany (that live in Europe), couchsurfing, and hostels.
I definitely want to start (and maybe end) in Germany because thats where my host families/friends are. I was hoping to keep Germany as my "home base" where I can keep extra clothes and whatnot at (at my host family's house) and if I need to, come back to rest/pick up things.
I know a major rule of backpacking is "don't backtrack!!" because you will waste time... BUT I want to backtrack because I feel better doing so. Someone tell me if I'm crazy or not... here's my itinerary (so far. I've got a whole year to plan!)

Start in Germany. Frankfurt/Stuttgart to visit a friend.
Move to Hamburg to see Host Family 2. (stay about a week)
Go to Finland/Norway/Sweden for 3 weeks.
Go back to Germany and see host family 1. (Cologne). (maybe a couple day trips to Luxemburg/Belgium/the Netherlands)
Northern France,
Spain
Southern France (total of three weeks split between France and Spain)
And back to Germany to go home.

I definitely want to throw a week in England in somewhere, but we'll see!
I know I'm traveling in a circle... Is that really such a bad thing?
