My friend and I are planning a trip to Europe this summer. We are thinking about flying into Madrid, then taking a train to Barcelona, then fly into paris, then fly to verona, and from verona take the train to florence, then to rome and then fly into london and then fly home. I have been to Rome and do not plan on spending too much time there. How much time is sufficient in each place? and how can we travel locally in each place? and is there a cheap way to save money on accomodations? I have been to Greece, Italy, and Amsterdam several times so I know a little about traveling in Europe but this will be my first time in most of these places. Any help?

Stay in hostels or inexpensive hotels. Sometimes an inexpensive hotels is cheaper than 2 people paying for hostel beds. In Italy convents are good, inexpensive places to stay. You also might look into dormatory rooms in colleges.
Truthfully, this does not look like a typical backpacking trip which I think of as a low budget type of travel. You're traveling to many places and changing locations always involves more money than staying in one or two locations.
I'm not sure what you mean by locally but perhaps you mean within the cities. Usually walking, bus, metro, tram are the public transporation methods.
You should also check out the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree forum which is geared toward younger travelers.
It would help if you let us know how much time you have - total. And what kind of budgetyou are looking at.
The trip outlined above sounds wonderful - but will cost a small fortune. So unless you have a trust fund or a lot saved for this trip you might want to provide some specifics.
