Hi. Am thinking of bringing my 16 mth baby for a holiday in the Italian countryside, maybe Tuscany. Is the region baby friendly? Any difficulities or recommendations on itineary or things to watch out for? Pediatricians available? Appreciate any advice.

I'm way past the baby stage, but Italy has much better health care than the US so don't worry about that part of it.

Actually, like most socialized medicine countries, the quality of healthcare depends on a numberg of factors--especially age, the type of medical condition you have, and what supplemental private insurance you can afford. Most Americans get just as good or better care than Europeans do--though not in Europe, Canada has a health care system similar to the western European countries, and there's a good reason that tens of thousands of them come to the USA for medical care each year.

The Italians love the babies!!! One of our kids was sick on our vacation in Tuscany the last day at our villa(we spent 2 weeks just outside San G.)
the day before we had to head to Rome we needed a doctor for strep throat-we were informed that this was the day that the visiting doctor was in town we were to go and stand in line at the church-this is where he was seeing his patients. Some of our family could speak italian which was good because they only spoke italian. For ideas of things that would be good to bring w/you read my other posts.

I'll echo the sentiments of the previous poster: Italians love children! Having him/her along is definite plus for raising the enjoyment quotient
