We loved the Carfax Hotel (www.carfaxhotel.co.uk), just off the Pulteney Bridge on Great Pulteney Street. The location couldn't have been more convenient--walk to virtually everything in the center of town, including the Abbey and Roman Baths--and the staff were all very gracious. They have parking in back, somewhat unusual for a place so close-in, and are completely nonsmoking throughout.

A standard double is about 75 GBP. (It also was particularly convenient for us because they are accessible to the disabled and my father uses a wheelchair.)

Although I haven't stayed at this hotel, may I second the recommendation for Great Pulteney Street as a good base for Bath. As well as being very well located, the street is the widest in England and is very impressive.

Kate, how interesting! I hadn't known that Great Pulteney is the widest in England. Even wider than some of the large boulevards in London? Cool! I do love walking Great Pulteney Street. One of our favorite times, when I took my parents there, was each evening as we left the Carfax to stroll up Great Pulteney in search of the evening's restaurant. The light there just has a quality that I never see here in the States, and there was something so elegant about strolling that beautiful avenue on the way to dinner.
Jim,
We stayed at a lovely (non smoking) B&B about 2 miles from Bath (that is why I asked if you have a car) The hosts were very nice and they sell some of their products there such as honey and candles. My husband still talks about how the bed we slept on was the most comfortable one ever. The breakfast (traditional English) waas wonderful. If we are ever in that area again we will definetly stay there. I will e-mail you the name of it from home because I just blanked on the name and I still have a jar of their honey that I can look at to give you the name etc...
