Avoiding Vatican on a free Sunday?

We will be in Rome during the free Sunday at the Vatican. When I think free... I'm thinking nothing is for free, I'll be paying for it with the huge crowds. I'm going in July when it will be crowded anyway. I was thinking of either going the day before. Most people may go for the free day and I could take advantage of a less crowded museum. Or is it so crowded on a Sat/Monday that it will make no difference and I should just take advantage if the free Subday? For 6 of us, a significant savings. If I get the pass or tour guide, should I still avoid that Sunday? Trying to be cost conscious but not to the point where it will greatly hinder enjoyment. Any experience out there with going the day before a free Sunday in high season?
