Avignon: hotel l'europe or cloitre st louis and gordes
Honeymoon in Paris and Provence (Avignon and Gordes). both 31 years old. New Yorkers. First time in France. Love a swanky, stylish type of trip experience.
In Avignon, what's the better hotel given our setup? l'Europe or Cloitre St. Louis? Fine with either price point. Can't afford la Mirande. Any must-do day trips? (Arles, l'estaque, cassis, etc)
Anyone been to gordes? Booked our room at les bories and spa. Good scene? If not, any recommendations? Don't want to go over 300 euros a night.
Thanks!

I've stayed at L'Europe. There a lovely out door
dining area. In Avignon, I stayed across the bridge in Villeneuve where I could walk, take a boat into Avignon. The hotel is very romantic, Le Priori.

I ask about the car because it's easy to get some places, Arles, for instance, by train. For others, like the Wednesday market in Uzès (also Sat.), with a stop at the Roman Pont du Gard, a car is better although there are buses too. Uzès is not far from Avignon, smaller, with with an entirely different feel, a nice trip even on non-market days.

The Avignon tourism office is very helpful and the website offers advice about side-trips in the region. The office, convenient to the Horlogue plaza in the city centre, is listed on the site http://www.avignon-tourisme.com/home-1-2.html

I, too, would like to see comments on experiences at the Cloitre Saint Louis. We are considering it for a week's stay in September. Location seems perfect for day trips by bus or train since we definitely will not be renting a car.

If you don't mind staying just outside Avignon itself (10 minute drive) we stayed at this hotel last time we were in Avignon:

It's recently been refurbished after changing hands too, so should be even nicer than it was.
