Avignon Christmas market

I will be in Avignon on Sunday, December 8 and Monday December 9 2013. If you've been to this Christmas market, what did you think? Also, I'm hoping that the stores that are usually closed on Sunday and Monday will be open because of the holidays. I couldn't find any information about that on line. I will not have a car, so I won't be able to go anywhere but the city itself. Thank you for your help

During December, most big stores are open on Sunday. All but the smallest shops have not closed on Monday for the past 40 years.

As for Christmas markets, I have never heard of the Avignon Christmas market, but I would imagine that it is the usual collection of 25-50 prefab chalets selling Chinese junk. This said, such markets can be quite charming.

Avignon is an absolutely beautiful city. We visited in December of 2006 and loved both the city and the market. The city is small and very walkable. Enjoy!

Actually, what dwzemens means is that Avignon intra muros is small and very walkable. Just like Carcassonne, there is a much larger and more modern city outside the walls.

Thank you. I'm doing a Christmas market trip to France including the cities of Paris Strasbourg Lyon and Avignon. I chose those because the families we have hosted over the last 30 years live in those towns. I will write a trip report upon my return to describe my experience. First time in France in the winter.
