Does anyone have information on renting an automatic car in italy? I've reserved an automatic vehicle in Calabria at the airport in September. My fair is the car will not be automatic. We arrive at the train station about twenty minutes from the airport. Our plan is to take a cab to pickup our car at the airport. But this seems like a lot of work if the vehicle is not automatic. Worth the trip if it is.

Good policy to call directly to the rental office in Calabria 48 hours in advance and confirm that you will receive an automatic. That gives them time to get one there from another office if one is not in-house or due in. Also, if you rented the car through a middleman like AutoEurope, then call the middleman to express your concerns. You can do that now and ask their advice about how to make sure you get the automatic you booked.

If you booked the car with a purely local Italian rental company, then I suggest you cancel & rebook through AutoEurope. That way you have more people working to solve the problem should one arise.

Thank you frencharmoire! I canceled with Expedia and rebooked with AutoEurope and I saved money AutoEurope was cheaper. I will call 48 hours to reconfirm our rental.

Great. When you call AutoEurope to reconfirm, make them promise to call the Italian local office to guarantee the automatic.
