Auto Transmission Where Are You?

Hi! Our European adventure is falling in place-step by step! Please give us your opinions on car rentals. We would like an automatic for 4 persons--We have been checking out small station wagons. We will need an 18 day rental and have found a VW Passat Wagon, automatic for 848.57-basic or 1,157.15-inclusive. Is it necessary to get the inclusive coverage? It appears the only difference is the addition of the collision damage waiver ins and the theft insurance. We will pick up and drop off at the Zurich airport. How does this sound? It looks like because of the length of rental, we would qualify for a 5% discount. We will be traveling in Switz, Italy, Austria and southern Germany. Thanks. The Traveler.

Traveler, you should call your insurance agent at home and ask what your auto insurance policy covers for rentals. If you're a member of AAA, you might check there too, as there might be some coverage. Also, some of the credit cards cover collision. But you need to check as each credit card varies.

Also, have you checked with Auto Europe regarding pricing?

Hello, Traveler!
So nice to hear your trip is falling into place for you.
You may already have looked at all your options, but I thought if you hadn't, perhaps you may benefit from my experiences last week.
I did some research on rental prices and found a better price through AutoEurope.com . The price beat anyone else by 20%.
Then, another Fodorite gave advice about Smarterliving.com, that if you join them (it's free, btw), you will get an extra 10% discount and a free cellphone. I joined smarterliving.com, emailed Autoeurope.com the code supplied to me by SL, and they gave me the discount and phone!
I am very pleased with their prices and, more importantly, their service.

They also have pictures of the cars you would select. I usually get a smaller car than what you need. I can't help you there.
Good luck, let us know what you decide.
Happy Travels,
Gigi

By all means investigate an auto lease rather than rental. Both Renault and Pugeot have lease programs for stays in excess of 17 days; both will save you considerable money over a rental. Check the ideamerge website mentioned above or Pugeot's site.

We have always used AutoEurope and YES- you do need to take ALL the insurance out from them===YOUR US AUTO INSURANCE does NOT cover you in Europe, NOR does your Credit Card cover you for EUROPEAN CAR RENTAL INSURANCE for both theft of collision...................

Take out AutoEurope's theft and COLLISION insurance.
