In July I'm organizing a tour for my 70-something in-laws. We'll be driving through the Wachau in Austria and I'd like to take them to some wineries. My father-in-law has grown grapes and made his own wine so is pretty knowledgeable and interested in anything concerning wine making. Neither one of them walks well or far so being able to drive them right to the vineyard would be best. Any suggestions for best wineries to visit or other ideas? We'll be there from about 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.
Thanks.

Most wineries in the wachau region are relatively small family owned and do not have the time, facilities for wine tours- perhaps just wine tasting.
Most wineries with their cellars are located in a village with vineyards themselves of small individual size outside of town.
many vineyards are located on terraces not really convenient to walk.
Some possibilities to tour
Winzer Krems / Sandgrubbe 13
in the town of krems - the gateway to the Wachau.
convenient parking and easy walking for a comprehensive tour.

Just to the east end of Dürnstein is Domane Wachau. This a well regarding co-operative of many small winzers in the Wachau.
www.domaene-wachau.at
large cellars and fine selection of wines-
inquire about tours- I think this are not constant there.
In Dürnstein itself -
as you walk into the village by the stone gate and village walls and on the left side- a small shop offering the local wines. You can test there and the staff is always one of the local winzers who must spend a fixed number of hours there yearly per the local wine association.
Parking in a town lot about 150 meters away - small fee to park.
Small table and seating there - fun time .

This NYTimes article talks about at least one family-run winery that may interest you and talks in general about Wachau wines.
The description given above centers on a day wine tour by bike.
I believe that this is not the best for those in the 70s with mobility problems.
Individual wineries open just for these groups naturally for a fee paid by tour company - ultimately by the tourist.
