Austria in October for 3.5 days, priorities?

Hello, I'm flying into Salzburg on a Wednesday morning, October 9, and I have to be in Strasbourg on Saturday night. I can get a really cheap advance ticket on the Deutsch Bann from Freilassing (just across the border from Salzburg) or Konstanz (across from Bregenz on Lake Constance) to Kehl (just across the border from Strasbourg), so basically I'd like to get my first taste of Austria in 3.5 days.

I thought perhaps I'd start in Salzburg and make my way to Lake Constance via Innsbruck, picking up the train to Strasbourg by Saturday afternoon. However, I'm open to suggestions---I've read about all the things to do and see in and around Salzburg, in Tyrol, etc., and it's just overwhelming. I know I don't have much time (and I'm using transport, not a car), so I'd appreciate some tips on must-sees considering my constraints and the time of year, etc.

As for priorities, I do want to spend at least Wednesday seeing Salzburg.

Thursday or Friday, I'd like to see some water and some dramatic high Alps scenery---a cable car high up somewhere would be nice. The Grossglockner Road sounds amazing, but there is precious little information on guided excursions (I know the postbus isn't running; the only ones I see are from Salzburg, for about 90 euro or more; I was hoping to find one from Zell am See, but to no avail. Would it be worth taking a whole day out for this?). There's also the lakes area, Halstatt, the ice caves, Berchtesgaden area, Lienz. And there seems to be things to do in and around Innsbruck, on my way out to Konstanz.

Saturday morning and afternoon I could spend around Lake Constance, perhaps (unless you think it would be better for me to take the train back from Salzburg).

Obviously there is too much for my time, so I'd love to hear some tips on whittling it down to some key must-sees. Thanks!
